We have noticed a problem. Many Deaf children are socially and communicatively isolated during the school holidays.
This needs to change.
By providing a safe space for Deaf children to visit during the UK school holidays, we will promote communication, socialisation and enjoyment, whilst reducing communication-based isolation and working to improve the wider public’s understanding of Deafness.
WHY?
Some of the Deaf children we work with do not have access to a competent communicative partner in their chosen communication mode at home. For example, a child who uses BSL does not have a person at home who can competently use BSL.
Many Deaf children have limited or no access to social opportunities because of their hearing loss, additional language-based needs, other needs, or socio-economic deprivation. They often require additional adult support in social or extra-curricular situations.
Social and communicative isolation during school holiday periods as a result of reduced or no access to a competent communicative partner outside of school is a significant issue.
This isolation can have significant negative impacts on the children's mental health and can manifest in behavioural issues when they return to school.
Many are geographically separated from their Deaf peers and have little to no contact with them during school holiday periods.
D.I.C.E's 'Communication Clubs' will change this.
WHO ARE WE?
We are a group from different backgrounds who have identified a need to improve extra-curricular opportunities for Deaf children who are at risk of isolation and marginalisation. We include Qualified Teachers of the Deaf, Specialist Teaching Assistants and others with a wealth of experience from private business.
Language deprivation is one of our biggest targets.
By offering a language rich environment at our Communication Clubs we will minimise language deprivation in Deaf children during the school holidays. Children joining us will be offered a language rich environment in their preferred mode, be that BSL, SSE or oral communication.
*What is language deprivation?*
Language deprivation in Deaf children is a delay in language development that occurs when sufficient exposure to language, spoken or signed, is not provided. This deprivation can exacerbate language delay, which in turn can negatively impact learning, socialising and mental health.
